Clarendon Centre Redevelopment, Oxford

Cambell Brown Engineers provided structural and construction engineering services for the redevelopment of the Clarendon Centre in Oxford city centre — a major mixed-use regeneration project that will transform the existing retail complex into a new commercial and public destination.

Our role focused on enabling the safe and efficient partial demolition of the existing structure while protecting retained elements and maintaining stability throughout the works.

Located in the heart of Oxford, the Clarendon Centre redevelopment involves the selective demolition and reconfiguration of the existing shopping centre to create a modern mixed-use development incorporating commercial, retail, laboratory and public space uses.

The constrained city-centre location, proximity to occupied neighbouring buildings, and requirement to retain significant structural elements created a complex engineering challenge requiring careful planning and sequencing.

Cambell Brown Engineers were appointed to provide structural and construction engineering input during the enabling and demolition phases of the project. Our services included the definition of demolition cut lines and retained structure interfaces, structural assessment of existing construction, temporary works strategy development, stability assessments during phased demolition, engineering support for demolition sequencing, and coordination with the wider design and demolition teams.

    The redevelopment required a highly controlled approach to demolition due to the combination of retained structures, restricted access, and the dense urban environment.

    A significant proportion of the existing structure was to remain in place during redevelopment. Careful analysis was required to determine safe cut lines and ensure the stability of retained elements throughout each phase of demolition.

    Temporary works played a critical role in maintaining structural integrity during progressive removal of existing structural components. Our team developed temporary works requirements to support the safe sequencing of demolition activities.

    Working within Oxford city centre introduced logistical and construction constraints, including limited access, adjacent occupied properties, and the need to minimise disruption to surrounding infrastructure and businesses.

    Close coordination between structural engineers, demolition specialists and the wider project team was essential to develop practical demolition methodologies and sequencing strategies.
